Veteran Founders Are Building the Health Tools the VA Cannot: A Growing Trend in Digital Health
The Department of Veterans Affairs serves more than 9 million veterans through its healthcare system, but the tools available for personal health tracking and disability claim documentation remain limited. A growing number of veteran entrepreneurs are stepping in to build solutions.
The Documentation Gap
VA disability claims rely heavily on documented evidence. Rating criteria for conditions like migraines, PTSD, tinnitus, and IBS specify frequency, severity, and functional impact thresholds. Yet the VA does not provide veterans with a structured tool to collect this data between appointments.
"The VA told me to keep a headache diary, but they did not give me one," said Ralph Pugh, an Army veteran who founded the health tracking platform BodySitRep. "So most veterans keep notes on paper, in their phone notes app, or not at all. Then they walk into a C&P exam with vague recollections instead of structured evidence."
Purpose-Built for VA Evidence
Pugh designed BodySitRep with VA rating criteria specifically in mind. The headache tracker includes a "prostrating" field because the 50% VA rating for migraines requires evidence of prostrating attacks. The mental health tracker includes nightmare frequency and sleep disruption logging because these map directly to PTSD assessment criteria.
"Ninety days of structured data showing headache frequency, prostrating episodes, and functional impact is a fundamentally different conversation than saying I get headaches a lot," Pugh said.
A Broader Trend
BodySitRep is part of a broader movement of veteran-founded health technology companies. Organizations like Code Platoon and VetsinTech are training veterans in software development, creating a pipeline of founders who understand both military health challenges and modern technology.
The veteran health tech market is expected to grow as more veterans transition into technology careers and apply their firsthand experience to solving healthcare problems the VA system has not adequately addressed.
BodySitRep is available at www.bodysitrep.com. Military-affiliated users receive bonus trackers at no cost.
